Castle Combe Circuit Renames Corners to Honour Pioneers

Castle Combe Circuit has officially renamed two of the key corners on its 1.85-mile racetrack to honour individuals who made significant contributions to the venue’s history and development.

The sweeping left-hand kinked straight previously known as Hammerdown is now officially

called Howard’s Way, in tribute to Howard Strawford (1935-2013). The following tight right-

hand turn formerly known as Tower has been renamed Gooch’s, in memory of Rodney Gooch

(1946-2019).

According to Graham Marshallsay, Managing Director of the circuit, both Strawford and Gooch were instrumental in shaping Castle Combe into its current form. Marshallsay said the new names will permanently acknowledge their passion and lasting impact on the venue.

Strawford is often described as the “saviour of the circuit”, having acquired the struggling track in 1976 and spent decades transforming it from a small facility into a thriving motorsport venue with substantial year-round activity and a growing workforce. His family remains involved in running the circuit.

Gooch, a former motorcycle racer, worked for more than 22 years in sales and marketing at

Castle Combe. He helped expand the circuit’s profile and introduced many staple events,

including motorcycle track days and the popular Grand National race meeting.

The renaming comes as part of Castle Combe’s 2026 season activities, with Howard’s Race Dayscheduled for early April.
