Christchurch, New Zealand — In a groundbreaking move for New Zealand motorsport, the Supercars Championship has officially confirmed that it will race at Christchurch’s Ruapuna Raceway in 2026 — marking the first time the South Island will host a round of the iconic touring car series.
The announcement positions Ruapuna as the newest addition to the Supercars circuit and cements a trans-island double-header for New Zealand, with both Christchurch and Taupō hosting events annually through 2028.
Located just 15 kilometres west of Christchurch’s city centre, Ruapuna Raceway is a club-run track operated by the Canterbury Car Club. The venue will undergo significant upgrades ahead of its Supercars debut, including resurfacing, enhanced sustainability features, and the development of a new fan lounge. These improvements are being partially funded by a nearly $1 million contribution already raised by the club.
Supercars CEO Shane Howard hailed the expansion as a major milestone for the series and for Kiwi motorsport enthusiasts.
“Christchurch has long been a hub for motorsport passion in New Zealand,” said Howard. “Ruapuna has immense potential, and this move underscores our deepening relationship with Kiwi fans and stakeholders.”
Since Supercars first raced in New Zealand in 2001, more than 2.3 million fans have attended the events, highlighting the country’s strong connection to the series. The addition of Christchurch to the calendar strengthens that legacy while opening up new opportunities for fans and regional tourism.
New Zealand Tourism Minister Louise Upston described the event as “an outstanding opportunity to showcase our motorsport culture and hospitality on the global stage.” Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger echoed that sentiment, calling the race “a huge win for the city’s economy, profile, and growing events portfolio.”
The Ruapuna announcement follows the success of Taupō International Motorsport Park’s debut on the Supercars schedule in 2024. That venue will remain a fixture through at least 2028.
