Denny Hamlin Pushes for NASCAR to Stay in Downtown Chicago

During recent media conversations, Denny Hamlin voiced his support for keeping NASCAR in

downtown Chicago. While recognizing the logistical challenges, Hamlin believes the urban

street circuit offers valuable exposure. Chase Elliott, however, prefers oval racing and is

pushing for NASCAR’s return to the historic Nashville Fairgrounds. Both drivers emphasized the importance of city-centered events, though their preferred formats differ. Hamlin favors the unique layout of city courses, while Elliott highlights the traditional appeal of short-track ovals. Their perspectives reflect NASCAR’s evolving efforts to balance innovation with heritage.

Hamlin's interest in preserving the Chicago race stems from its strategic value in reaching urban audiences. He believes maintaining a presence in major cities is essential for NASCAR’s continued growth and relevance. However, a possible return to the now-dormant Chicagoland Speedway is also being considered if the street race falls through.

Meanwhile, Chase Elliott emphasized the significance of short-track ovals, naming the Nashville Fairgrounds as his ideal venue. Elliott supports efforts to revive the site, recently approved for renovation, calling it a perfect opportunity to reconnect fans with NASCAR's roots.

Corey LaJoie and Carson Hocevar also weighed in. Hocevar expressed enthusiasm about a

potential return to Chicagoland Speedway, noting the track’s worn surface and racing

characteristics. Though mostly inactive, the speedway hosted a SuperMotocross event in 2023, keeping it minimally maintained.

Elliott believes city races help expand the fanbase but insists that nothing matches the

authenticity of short-track oval racing. He views the Nashville Fairgrounds as a standout chance for fans to experience NASCAR in its purest form, reinforcing its cultural and historical significance.

As NASCAR considers its urban racing future, drivers like Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott offer contrasting visions. Hamlin supports maintaining high-profile city events like the Chicago Street Race for broader visibility. Elliott, however, pushes for tradition, backing the Nashville Fairgrounds revival to reconnect fans with NASCAR's roots. Their differing views highlight the ongoing balance between innovation and heritage as the sport evolves.
