Formula E Exploring Longer Jeddah Corniche Circuit for Gen4 Cars

Formula E is in discussions with Saudi Arabian motorsport authorities about using an extended version of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit once the Gen4 era begins in the 2026/27 season.

When Formula E moved its Saudi Arabian round to Jeddah in 2025, it raced on a shortened 3 km layout of the Formula 1 track because the original Diriyah circuit was unavailable. This modified configuration shared the F1 start/finish straight and Turns 1–3 but diverted through a tighter section and rejoined near Turns 21–22, adding four extra chicanes to create strong braking and energy regeneration zones.

With the incoming Gen4 car set to produce around 800 bhp and significantly higher speeds, the championship wants a layout that better showcases its performance and extends race duration. Talks are underway for a hybrid track configuration that uses more of the original F1 circuit while still suiting Formula E’s unique racing format.

Series officials have indicated the full 6.17 km F1 route isn’t expected to be used immediately, but simulations are ongoing to find the right balance between speed, regeneration zones, and raceability for the electric cars.

Gen4 cars are faster and larger than their predecessors, meaning current short layouts can

result in very brief lap times that don’t fully exploit the car’s capabilities. An extended circuit

could increase lap times into a more desirable 1 min 10 s – 1 min 20 s range, giving fans better racing and cars more opportunity to demonstrate top speed and energy management.

A key point of discussion among drivers has been the number of artificial chicanes on the

current Jeddah layout. While they help with energy regeneration, many feel they disrupt the

natural flow of the track. Some drivers support reducing these or extending faster sectors to

make the circuit more representative of its F1 counterpart.

Formula E organisers are actively reviewing different layout options and refining the calendar

for the next season, with the goal of finalising an updated configuration that better suits the

enhanced capabilities of Gen4 machinery.
