Poznań Circuit Closed Until Further Notice

The Poznań Circuit has been temporarily closed following a decision by the Chief Inspectorate for Environmental Protection, citing excessive noise levels and the resulting impact on nearby residents. The ruling was issued just days before the start of the new racing season and shortly ahead of key national motorsport events scheduled at the venue.

Tor Poznań, opened in 1977 on the grounds of a former military training area and partially using infrastructure linked to the historic Ławica airport, is widely regarded as the most important motorsport facility in Poland. It is also the country’s only FIA-certified racing circuit, hosting a broad range of national and international competitions, including touring car championships, motorcycle racing, karting series, and amateur track events.

The closure has reignited a long-standing debate over land use, urban expansion, and noise

regulations. Residential developments around the circuit expanded significantly in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, well after both the airport and the racing facility were established. This has contributed to ongoing tensions between motorsport operations and local communities, particularly as housing density in the area has increased.

Supporters of the circuit emphasize its national significance and economic contribution, noting its role in developing Polish motorsport talent and hosting internationally recognized drivers and events. The venue has previously welcomed figures such as Robert Kubica, Lewis Hamilton, and Michael Schumacher during various stages of their careers, reinforcing its status within the European racing landscape.

Discussions about the future of the facility are not new. Over the past decade, local authorities have periodically raised questions about noise mitigation, relocation, or redevelopment of the site. However, no long-term resolution has been implemented, and proposals have repeatedly stalled amid competing interests.

The current suspension leaves uncertainty surrounding upcoming competitions and the broader racing calendar in Poland. Event organizers and stakeholders are now awaiting further clarification on whether the circuit will reopen under revised conditions or face more

permanent operational changes.
