Officials have revealed the layout for the new IndyCar race that will take place in
Washington, D.C., along with the official branding for the event. The race, called the
Freedom 250 Grand Prix, is scheduled for August 22–23, 2026 and will run through
the streets surrounding the National Mall as part of celebrations for the 250th
anniversary of the United States.
The temporary street circuit will measure approximately 1.66–1.7 miles and feature
seven turns, creating a compact course that blends high-speed sections with more
technical corners.
A major highlight of the track is the 0.4-mile front straight along Pennsylvania
Avenue, where drivers will race with views of the Washington Monument and the
U.S. Capitol in the background.
The layout winds through the heart of the capital and passes several well-known
landmarks, including:
The National Mall
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
The National Archives
The National Gallery of Art
Pit lane will also be located on Pennsylvania Avenue, positioned between the first
two corners of the circuit.
IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden described the track as a unique challenge,
highlighting the fast straight on Pennsylvania Avenue and the tighter sections near
9th Street that will require precision from drivers.
Organizers say the circuit was designed to prioritize safety, fan access, and the
visual impact of racing among some of the United States’ most recognizable
monuments. The race weekend is expected to be free and open to the public, giving
spectators a rare chance to watch IndyCar racing in the centre of the nation’s capital.
Construction of the temporary circuit is expected to begin later in the summer as
preparations ramp up for the event.
Alongside the track design, organizers also unveiled the official Freedom 250 Grand
Prix logo. The design features an IndyCar in front of the U.S. Capitol dome, using a
patriotic red, white and blue colour scheme to reflect the nation’s 250th anniversary
celebration.
A special red-white-and-blue IndyCar livery was also introduced to promote the
event. The car will be displayed throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia
in the months leading up to the race to build excitement for the inaugural event.
